Het verhaal van Michael Mwesezi
Mike hebben we vanaf het begin in sponsoring. Hij komt uit een eerdere sponsorgroep en wij hebben hem in 2018 overgenomen in ons sponsortraject.
Het was oktober 2017 en we gingen op huisbezoek, toen nog achter op de bodaboda met een enorme tas met cadeautjes van de sponsors. Dat kon toen nog, want we hadden toen maar zo'n 60 kinderen in sponsoring.
Mike excuseerde gelijk zijn moeder, want ze moest werken op het land om groenten te oogsten voor het avondeten. Vader was er wel. We gaven het pakketje van de sponsor en toen moesten we naar Daniël. Maar we wisten niet zo goed waar we naar toe moesten. Mike ging voorop de bodabda en ik achterop en zo wees Mike ons de weg naar Daniël. Daar aangekomen kreeg ook Daniël natuurlijk een cadeautje van zijn sponsor. Het zat dicht met nietjes. Met eindeloos geduld heeft Mike de nietjes voor hem losgemaakt! Hoe behulpzaam!
Dit huisbezoek aan Mike en Daniël, blijft tot op de dag van vandaag op mijn netvlies gebrand staan!

We have had Mike in our sponsorship from the very beginning. He comes from a previous sponsorship group, and we included him in our sponsorship program in 2018.
It was October 2017, and we went on a home visit, back then still on the back of the bodaboda with a huge bag of gifts from the sponsors. That was still possible back then, because we only had about 60 children in our sponsorship at the time.
Mike immediately excused his mother, because she had to work in the fields harvesting vegetables for dinner. Father was there, though. We handed over the package from the sponsor, and then we had to go to Daniel. But we weren't quite sure where we were supposed to go. Mike went to the front of the bodaboda and I went to the back, and so Mike showed us the way to Daniel. Once we arrived, Daniel naturally received a gift from his sponsor as well. It was closed with staples. With endless patience, Mike unstuck the staples for him! How helpful!
This home visit to Mike and Daniel remains etched in my memory to this very day!
Mike doet het heel goed op school. Is een serieuze jongen waar nauwelijks een lachje af kan en toch zie je aan hem wel dat het goed gaat. Ook de leraren zijn zeer tevreden en zijn PLE (Primers Leaver Exam) behaalt hij met de hoogste cijfers: 6 punten in division 1. En dat is in Uganda ontzettend goed!
Hij is er geweldig blij mee en kiest voor een goede Secondary School, want hij wil chirurg worden! Hij gaat naar St. Joseph Mary's Senior Secondary School in Mbirizi.
We zien hem daar in Secondary 1 en hij heeft het prima naar zijn zin.

Mike is doing very well at school. He is a serious boy who rarely smiles, yet you can tell that he is doing well. The teachers are also very satisfied, and he achieves the highest grades in his PLE (Primers Leaver Exam): 6 points in Division 1. And that is incredibly good in Uganda!
He is thrilled with this and chooses a good secondary school, because he wants to become a surgeon! He attends St. Joseph Mary's Senior Secondary School in Mbirizi.
We see him there in Secondary 1, and he is having a great time.
Maar dan slaat het noodlot toe voor hem en gaan alle scholen dicht vanwege Corona. Hij kan niet verder leren en dat doet hem veel verdriet. Hij gaat thuis op het land werken en leert hoe hij chapattis moet maken, maar verkopen is geen optie, want er is ook geen openbaar vervoer meer om naar Masaka te kunnen gaan.
's Avonds leest hij zijn boeken en samen met grote vriend Jamadah, vraagt hij zich af hoe het met de Corona in Nederland is en of wij nog gezond zijn.
Ja, het gaat met ons goed, maar ook wij missen ons werk in Uganda, onze vrienden en sponsorkinderen, appen wij terug.

But then disaster strikes for him, and all schools close due to Corona. He cannot continue his studies, and that causes him great sadness. He goes to work on the land at home and learns how to make chapattis, but selling them is not an option, because there is no longer any public transport to get to Masaka.
In the evenings, he reads his books, and together with his great friend Jamadah, he wonders how things are with Corona in the Netherlands and if we are still healthy.
Yes, we are doing well, but we also miss our work in Uganda, our friends, and our sponsored children, we text back.
In mei 2022 zien we hem weer op St. Joseph en hij is super blij dat hij weer naar school kan, hij vervolgt zijn studie na 2 jaar onderbreking en haalt goede cijfers. In 2023 doet hij examen en slaagt met vlag en wimpel. Hij wil verder, door naar Secondary 5 en 6, maar dan op een andere school. Hij wil graag naar Blessed Sacr. Kimany in Masaka en daar zien we hem weer. Hij haalt de beste cijfers en hij en wij zijn tevreden!
Tot dat moment wordt zijn studie door een goede sponsor betaald, maar in 2025 krijgen we het bericht dat de sponsoring stopt en dat we op zoek moeten naar een andere sponsor en dat is lastig, want de vervolgstudie die Mike wil volgen is op de universiteit en dat is een kostbare studie.
We gaan op zoek en het toeval wil dat er zich een nieuwe sponsor meldt, die een erfenis te verdelen heeft en Lwengo Kids Foundation krijgt een deel van deze erfenis.
We besluiten in overleg met de nieuwe sponsor dat een deel van deze erfenis voor de studie van Mike gebruikt mag worden. En dat gaan we hem in oktober 2025 vertellen!

In May 2022, we see him again at St. Joseph, and he is super happy that he can go back to school. He resumes his studies after a two-year break and achieves good grades. In 2023, he takes his exams and passes with flying colors. He wants to continue, moving on to Secondary 5 and 6, but at a different school. He wants to go to Blessed Sacr Kimany in Masaka, and we see him there again. He achieves the best grades, and both he and we are satisfied!
Up until that moment, his studies are paid for by a good sponsor, but in 2025, we receive the message that the sponsorship is ending and that we need to look for another sponsor. This is difficult, because the further education Mike wants to pursue is at university, and that is an expensive course of study.
We start looking, and by chance, a new sponsor comes forward who has an inheritance to divide, and Lwengo Kids Foundation receives a share of this inheritance.
In consultation with the new sponsor, we decide that a portion of this inheritance may be used for Mike's studies. And we are going to tell him that in October 2025
Dan is het wachten op de uitslag van het examen en dat laat heel lang op zich wachten. Pas begin maart (2026) krijg ik het verlossende appje van Mike: "Marga just know, I am so happy" en dan komt het resultaat. Een uitmuntend resultaat! Ons toppertje is geslaagd met 23 punten en hij is daarmee één van de beste leerlingen!

Then it was a matter of waiting for the exam results, and that took a very long time. It wasn't until early March that I received the relieving message from Mike: "Marga just know, I am so happy," and then the result arrived. An outstanding result! Our little star passed with 23 points, making him one of the best students!
Nu dan naar de universiteit in Kampala. Een hele nieuwe wereld met veel uitdagingen. We gaan hem volgen in zijn opleiding tot arts!

Now off to the university in Kampala. A whole new world with many challenges. We are going to follow him in his training to become a doctor!
